Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Religion plays a significant role in shaping the cultural and social fabric of Nigerian society. However, the increasing use of digital media has led to the amplification of religious discourse, which, in some cases, has contributed to tensions and conflicts. In Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, where there is a rich blend of different religious communities, digital media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp have become influential in shaping public opinions and inter-religious relationships. While digital media has the potential to exacerbate religious intolerance, it also offers opportunities for promoting religious tolerance by fostering dialogue and understanding among diverse religious groups. Studies by Ahmed and Musa (2023) show that digital platforms have been used to challenge stereotypes and promote peaceful coexistence. This study explores how digital media can be leveraged as a tool for promoting religious tolerance in Zaria, analyzing the strategies used to reduce religious discrimination and encourage peaceful interfaith interactions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Zaria Local Government Area has witnessed incidents of religious intolerance, fueled in part by misinformation and biased narratives circulating on digital platforms. Although digital media can be a powerful tool for promoting interfaith dialogue, the challenge lies in how these platforms are used. There is a need to understand how digital media can contribute to reducing religious conflicts and promoting tolerance in Zaria. This study seeks to examine how digital media is being utilized for religious tolerance and the impact it has on fostering peaceful interfaith relations.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the use of digital media for religious tolerance in Zaria Local Government Area and focuses on digital platforms such as social media, websites, and mobile applications. It does not cover other forms of communication or extend to other regions.
